Self-Reliant Saturdays-- Clearance Sales

There are two words that make me really happy....clearance & sale.  Becoming totally prepared in every way can be a pricey endeavor and I couldn't do it all if it weren't for sales and clearance aisles at the store.  While at my local Wal-Mart today I passed by the clearance aisle in the camping/outdoor section of the store.  I was on the lookout for flashlights and I hit the jackpot.  They had all sorts of flashlights, headlamps, smaller lanterns on clearance from $2-$7 each.  I was ecstatic!  As I perused the aisle a little longer I noticed a camping shower tent on the bottom shelf for $25!!  I have been on the lookout for one of these enclosures to use with my portable potty and also for my solar shower.  I couldn't believe the price, and there were several on the shelf.  I bought the shower tent, multiple flashlights, several headlamps, and two boxes of fire starters.

My preparedness tip for this Self-Reliant Saturday is to always walk by the clearance section of every store you visit.  

The selection is always varied and you'll never know what is there, but it will save you money! This is also an example of why I keep a running list of things that I need to purchase for my family.  You can run across those items on your list at the most random places and times.

Emergencies and Sanitation

After a natural disaster, or any other emergency, clean up will begin and people will try to get their lives back to normal.  But there will be one area of concern.....sanitation.   The after effects of a disaster will be more deadly then the actual event because of the sanitation situation.  Contaminated water equals disease! Be prepared with a portable toilet, cleansers, sanitizers, toilet paper, manual washing machine, soaps, towels of all sizes, and of course water!

 September is National Emergency Preparedness Month and it would be a great time to gather sanitation essentials and add them to your storage.

Have you thought about the aftermath of no public utilities?  No working toilets?  I don't want to thing too much about that, but we do need to be ready to deal with human waste.  Portable potties, or luggable loos, are a must-have item in everyone's storage.  They are cheap and simple to put together.  Tough garbage bags, kitty litter (to absorb the waste), and a snap on toilet seat are a must in your kit!!  Click HERE to view my post on the portable potty.

One thought I have when my kids are ill is how I am going to help them feel better if there were no modern conveniences, or even modern medicine.  Many people in this day in age still die from diarrhea.  Third world countries are where this is still happening, but in a situation where our sanitation is compromised we will see an increase of people with diarrhea.  Keeping a person, especially a child, hydrated will become very necessary.  Click HERE to see how to make an electrolyte drink from items you probably already have in your storage.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM THAT YOU NEED IN YOUR STORAGE, FOR SANITATION, AND IN GENERAL......IS WATER!!!  You will need more water when someone becomes ill and for cleaning in general after a disaster.  Stocking up on Clorox wipes and other cleaning supplies will help tremendously in a situation where there isn't indoor plumbing.  Washcloths and extra towels would also be great to have on hand.

There are many non-food essentials to have in your storage, but hand sanitizers and other cleaners are very important.  You don't want to survive a disaster to then succumb to sickness because of contaminated water.  

Emergency Prep Classes

I attended 2 emergency preparedness classes that I would like to share with you.  Both classes were held at the Honeyville Grain store out by the airport.  They are free and open to anyone.  Click HERE to get more information.

The first class was taught by Lisa Barker, the store manager, and her class was about "What's in Your Ark?"  We learned about having a one month supply and how much that would cost.  
One Month Supply

Fats & Oils 1 2/3lbs
Legumes 5lbs
Cost of buying this all at Honeyville as of 4/2011 was $40.00 & change. That is very affordable and you would have the basics for one person!!

Oat Groats & the Oat Roller

The most interesting part of the class was learning about oat groats and how to roll them.  They have a 25-40 year shelf life when stored properly.  And 1/2 C groats grinds into 1 C of oats. You wouldn't need to store as much of the groats as the regular oats because they double in size.  A bag of groats cost $29.00 at Honeyville, and the oat roller is also available at the store.

Hand Held Food Saver

The most exciting gadget at the class was the hand held food saver.  I have written about the food saver but I have to pull mine out of the cupboard and get all my parts out.  But with the hand held device it just stores on your counter!  You can store ALL kinds of things in glass canning jars and seal it with the food saver!  I store chocolate chips, marshmallows, seasonal candy, baking soda, baking powder, dehydrated fruits and veggies, raisins, spices, etc.  Your imagination is the limit! When you open a #10 can of dehydrated or freeze dried food you can seal the unused food in mason jars and it keeps like it was sealed in a can!  Honeyville will be selling these starting next week (4/25).  They run about $34.xx!!  Having a food saver will allow the food in your Ark to last longer and save you money!!  Are You An Asset or a Liability?

The second class was taught by Tami Girsberger, and she taught us how to be an Asset and not a Liability when it comes to disasters and emergencies.  We all have different assets to share with others.  In an emergency I may have the food and luggable loos while others may have knowledge in the medical fields.  Others may be a comforter to the distressed and many will have the ability to repair homes and buildings.  We all need to have compassion and know that our specific asset will be of use in an emergency.  Tami has a great company that sells portable potties and washing machines out of 5 gallon buckets.  Her website preparemylife.com has more info.


One of the most important pieces of information that I took away from her class was that we all needed a PLAN!  If there was an emergency during the day and your husband was at work and your kids were at school, where would you all meet?  Have a family meeting and talk about a neighborhood meeting place and a meeting place outside of your neighborhood.  Also you NEED to have an out of state contact that everyone knows the phone number of.  If you couldn't contact your family because of phone lines being tied up, you may be able to reach the out of state contact person.  This way if everyone checked in with that one person you would all be on the same page and have the comfort of knowing everyones situation. 

I found out about Steramine from Tami.  It comes in a small bottle and contains 150 tablets.  You dissolve the tablets in one gallon of water and it will sanitize anything and kill any germ or bacteria that you can think of.  Use it to sterilize cooking and bathroom areas, and also your dishes.  The bottles are $6 and are available through Tami.  Her email is tami@preparemylife.com.  

Also check out the really cool water containers, called Rocky Mountain Water, that are portable and don't ever expire. Turn them on their side and they have a spigot that pokes into the water bladder. You can order them through Tami as well for around $6.50 when you buy 6 or more.


There was so much more information learned at these classes. I highly suggest you check them out!  On Tuesday, April 26th at 11:00 the executive chef from Shirley J will be cooking and demonstrating the Shirley J products.  Yummy!!

Case Lots & Classes

I had a week full of case lot shopping and emergency prep classes.  I love learning more about preparedness and seeing how others organize their food storage.  

I attended two classes at Honeyville Farms in Salt Lake City.  They are free and open to anyone.  In April they have a class every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.

This past Tuesday Glen Weeks (a retired Major in the Army & Preparedness Consultant) gave a lecture on emergency preparedness and getting through the first 72 hours of an emergency.  He  explained how sanitation would become our biggest problem if there were no more working indoor plumbing.  Everyone needs to have a portable loo.  Click HERE to view a previous post on luggable loo's.

Today I attended another class at Honeyville taught by Liesa Card.  She has written a wonderful book titled "I Dare You To Eat It" and she describes her journey of food storage and obedience.  I learned how she keeps 30 meals in her kitchen by storing her food by recipe.  So in one cupboard are her rice dinners with all the canned goods together for that recipe.  She does this for wheat, pasta, rice, beans, and potatoes.  What I took away from hearing Liesa is that we, as members of the church, are commanded to prepare and in doing so we can help others along the way.  We can be the person to bless others in time of need along with being prepared for our own families.  Check our Liesa's website HERE.  


Remember you have until Tuesday to shop the case lot sales! Stock up and get great prices on food before they soar even higher.


April Goals

3-Month Supply Goal:  Use your ingredient lists (made from all the recipes that you are including in your 3-month menu) to shop the case lot sales.  Buy at least one case of food for your storage.

Water Storage Goal:  Look for deals on water. (Smiths has a 24ct case of water for $2.50).  Also use this month as your water rotation month. Empty those large water containers and fill them with fresh water.

Financial Reserve Goal: Use some of your savings (from Feb. & March) to purchase a few cases of food from the case lot sales.

Long-Term Goal:Purchase food and supplies from the case lot sales.  Do you see a trend?:)  It is your choice as to what to purchase, but don't let the sales end without purchasing a few items. I love to get all my paper towel and toilet paper from Maceys grocery store.  I try to get at least 6 months worth (the next case lot sale will be in Sept. to restock)
 

Emergency Preparedness Goal:  April and October are our 72-hour kit months.  You will need to get yours out and go through them.  Eat the food near expiration and rotate warm and cold weather clothes.  If you don't have a 72-hour kit PLEASE have a basic kit with a backpack, water, and at least some granola bars.  Then work on expanding your kit.  Look on the side bar of the blog for more ideas to add to your kits. 

This is such a great time to catch up if you haven't been stocking your pantry!  Don't waste any more time, get those cases of food and start cooking with them!

Self Reliance Expo-Part 1

Christmas came early for me this year!  I was able to spend 5 hours surrounded by food storage, portable potties, generators, water storage containers & purification containers.  Today I attended the Self Reliance Expo at the South Towne Expo Center and it has to be the best expo I have ever attended. I was so lucky to win tickets from one of my favorite blogs, blog.totallyready.com. Every booth was filled with products for and about emergency preparedness.  Of course I took my camera and documented my day.  You may want to get comfy because this could be a long post, but there was so much information that I wanted to collect to pass on to all of you.  I tried to get a website for each of the vendors that I am spotlighting so please visit their sites for more information.  

The fun started outside the venue where they had trailers set up with all the comforts of home inside.  They are from the Timberline Range Camp company and you can see more at their website trccamps.com.

The Humless Roadrunner Generator & The Ultimate Bag 72-Hour Kit

 The first booth to catch my eye was the Hummless Roadrunner company.  The small black box on the ground is a generator and is a silent, clean, safe, ultra portable unit.  You can charge it from a regular outlet, use solar panels, or hand crank/ bicycle crank.  It is safe to use indoors or in a tent and it has a 110AC outlet, 12VDC outlet, and USB ports.  There were different sizes and I believe they ran from $200-$1500.  Check out amazon.com for the portable lithium generator. 


The other item that really intrigued me was the 72-hour kit duffle bag that zipped open and can be hung up. It is called the Ultimate Bag and you can see it in the picture above.  What a clever idea to have all your kit supplies in a designated compartment and in such a small bag.  I thought this was such a great idea.  Check out www.theultimatebag.com for more information.

Kitchen Kneads

 Kitchen Kneads is a great local company that sells all things food storage related.  In the picture is the Sun Oven (they can answer any question you have about a Sun Oven), the Wonder Mill grinder and many food storage canned goods.  They are located at 7579 S. Redwood Rd.  and their number is 801-561-9616.   They have some great sales around LDS Conference times, but you should check them out before April :)

Augason Farms

 One of my favorite stores is the Augason Farms store (formerly the Blue Chip Group).  They sell the Maggie Moo's brand of milk and have many food items.  I buy applesauce powder, canned cheese, canned meat, oats, etc., AND they have a really fun outlet room with great prices.  They are located at 3431 S. 500 W, just west of I-15 off the 33rd south exit.  Check out their website augasonfarms.com .  We got to test the broccoli soup and the potato cheddar soup and it was delicious!  The small cans in the picture are only $2.50.

       Of course Emergency Essentials was at the expo.  They are a wonderful company that sell canned food, dehydrated food, MRE's, sleeping bags, candles, porta potties (with lids that seal),  water drums, wheat, oats, rice, you name it they sell it!  They have a really amazing food storage analyzer that will help you keep track of what food you have stored and the vitamins and nutrients that you may be lacking in your storage (check their website for more info).  My sister and I answered a trivia question and I received a reusable hand warmer.  It is like the one- use Hotties except you can boil it and it returns to it's original state. You can get 10 of them for $20.  Guess what my family is getting in their stockings this year.  You can find all of their info at beprepared.com or visit their store at 110 W. 33rd S.

Some of the best books on food storage are written by Peggy Layton.  Cookin' With Home Storage is one of my favorites and I refer to it many times when I am cooking.  She has also authored the Cookin' With series that includes Cookin' With Potatoes, Cookin' With Powdered Milk, Cookin' With Dried Eggs, and Cookin' With Beans and Rice.  I highly suggest owning these cookbooks and to get to know them.  Peggy really knows what she is doing when it comes to using your food storage and also maintaining your food storage program.  Her book Food Storage 101 "Where do I Begin?" is a great book to get you motivated on starting your food storage.  For more information check out peggylayton.com.

Easy Water Storage company

November is here and we have new goals to start.  This month will be all about storing cooking essentials and personal hygiene items.  In November the stores have many baking sales and we need to take advantage of these low prices and stock up!!  Watch for yeast, baking soda, baking powder, oil, spices,salt, etc. to be at rock bottom prices.  Flour and sugar are also great deals, and we will be storing those in Dec., but feel free to purchase those if you find a great price on them.  Watch for canned pumpkin, cranberry sauce, stuffing mixes, olives, cake & brownie mixes to also be on sale.  It is kind of a big month for stocking up on groceries so pace yourself and stay within your budget!!

Earthquake Survival Night Re-Cap!!

Earthquake survival night was a success! Thank you to everyone who came and thank you to all who helped put this together. I tried to get some pictures of the information that was presented so those who were unable to attend could still benefit from the information that was presented.

Maralin Hoff was a wonderful presenter and was quite comical as well. I will highlight some of the things that I found interesting.

Maralin had great ideas when it comes to preparing for the "big one", but I loved her little suggestions. In the picture she is holding a grocery cart and she explained that if you are in the store when an earthquake is happening that the cart is your friend. You can tuck your head underneath the cart or even tip it on the side and get your head covered that way. Always put a child or baby in first and then yourself.

She also went through car kits and how important it is to have one. If there is an earthquake it may take HOURS to get home. You will need water, food, shovel, flashlight, batteries, matches, etc. in your car. Don't forget to rotate your items as well. A great tip she shared is to wrap your water in one of the foil blankets and it will help to keep it from going bad as quickly. Maralin also suggested to buy a mylar insulated lunch box from the dollar store to keep your first aid items in. The mylar will help regulate the temperature and you won't loose your band aids or first aid ointment to the heat. The lunch box will also save your duct tape as well.

• Use the Hot/Cold bags found at the grocery store to grab food quickly out of the fridge/freezer in an evacuation.
• Put nylon grip liners on all your shelves to prevent things from sliding.
• Use sticky velcro on the back of pictures to keep them hanging straight in an earthquake.
• Use bungee cords on storage shelving to keep contents in tact.
• Place cardboard between mason jars to prevent breakage.
• Tie whistles to wheel chairs, strollers, anywhere someone may need one to call for help.

Make sure your water heater is secure using the proper metal fasteners.
This is probably my favorite idea from the whole presentation. Keep kitty litter in a 2-liter bottle to sprinkle in your portable potty. I have been debating on what to use for our portable potty and this is so much easier than all the chemicals. Maralin reminded us all to NEVER use kitty litter in ANY toilets. It will clog your plumbing like cement. Maralin gave portable potty's to all of her family for Christmas. Giving preparedness items as gifts is a great way to help family members get prepared.




The displays were so complete and a great visual on how much, and what to put in the different kits. The kit above is a 72-hour kit with all the goodies that go inside.


Another kit that you should have is a workplace kit. The chances of an earthquake happening while you are at work is very likely. Being prepared with first aid items and water and food will help you until you are able to get home.

I thought that this evening was so informative and it was so great to have so many of you come. I hope you were able to take away some great ideas. We will be having a block captain meeting in the near future to follow up on what still needs to be collected.

Earthquakes, Water, & Sanitation

As most of you heard, we had a 4.9 earthquake in northern Utah this week. I hope that you will all see this as a warning of a bigger earthquake and take this time to prepare yourselves. Click HERE to view the Utah Red Cross Be Ready Checklist.

 I strongly urge you all to have adequate water storage. Make it a priority! Think of how many times you turn on a faucet during the day. Many people 

 will be inconvenienced when there is no water. I like to have large spray bottles on hand for times that we won't have water. I will use one for water with soap in it and one with just water. The kids can spray their hands with the soapy water and then a few sprays with the water bottle. This will save water when everyone washes their hands.

How is everyone doing with the April goals? Have you planned a garden or found a container to plant a few plants in? I hope everyone took advantage of the case lot sales and stocked up on the food items that your family uses.

One of the other April goals is to gather cleaning supplies and in this category is also sanitation. I know, none of us want to think of this, but we really do need to prepare for times of toilets not flushing. On to the portable potty......

During a disaster “just plan on losing your utilities.” It is important to have a Sanitation Kit because we don’t know when our disaster will be. The lack of proper sanitation can cause the spread of disease and even death.
Here’s some ideas for assembling your own Sanitation Kit:

SANITATION KIT:
“Luggable Loo*” - snap-on lid (fits 5 or 6 gallon buckets)
1 (5 or 6-gallon) bucket
Store the following inside your bucket until needed:

• Heavy Duty disposable garbage bags (you won’t want to deal with leaky bags
• 1 (12 oz.) “Super Sorb” (takes care of odors - available at janitorial supply stores)
• 1 container “Hi-Genic” (non-acid bowl and bathroom cleaner - available at janitorial supply stores)
• 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide (natural disinfectant)
• 1 small bottle of vinegar
• 1 container baking soda
• 1 empty spray bottle
• 2 to 3 rolls toilet paper (with cardboard removed)
• 1 pkg. baby wipes
• Feminine hygiene supplies
• Disposable gloves
• Hand sanitizer
• Lotion (hand sanitizer will tend to dry out hands)
• Bonus: 2 emergency blankets (for your privacy screen if needed)

Directions: Empty contents of the bucket. Line the bucket with a heavy duty disposable garbage bag. Put 1 tablespoon “Super Sorb” into the garbage bag. Securely attach “Luggable Loo” lid. Keep lid closed when not in use. When bucket is 1/3 full, empty it by tying the bag up and disposing of it properly.
To dispose of waste:
Emergency Sewage Storage. “Keep on the premises at least one extra 10-gallon garbage can or other waterproof container with a tight fitting cover. This should be lined with paper and/or a plastic bag. And the lid should be fastened to the can to prevent its loss. Such a can may be used for the emergency storage of body wastes until the public sewage system can be put back into action, or until other arrangements can be made. Empty your emergency toilet into this storage can as often as necessary. A small amount of household disinfectant should be added after each use. If you live in an apartment, you may not have a large garbage can or room to keep one. “When the plastic bag is filled to a point where you can carefully dispose of it, you will want a tight-fitting leak-proof container you can put the filled bags where insects and vermin cannot get at, or you may want to have a fairly deep hole (at least three to four feet deep) in your back yard where you can safely dispose of the bag, cover with a few inches of soil at each disposal and have a cover to keep vermin out and people from falling in….” –Sanitation, Part 1
